How to Safely Play Sports
Engaging in competitive activities helps you develop your health, fuels your determination, lets you have fun, gives you the opportunity to do your best, and allows you to meet new friends. However, you also need to be safe in order to reap the benefits of sports. Here are some important guidelines on how to avoid incurring an injury when playing a game.
First, make sure you are wearing the proper safety gear. In many sports, safety helmets, eye protection, mouth guards, pads, and proper footwear are needed. Make sure too that these are in top condition. Wearing worn-out safety gear is as dangerous as not wearing them at all. Next, be sure to do stretches and warm-up exercises before rushing to play. Your muscles need to be stretched and brought to the right temperature to lessen the chance of injury. You also need to do some cardio-vascular exercises such as jogging or doing jumping-jacks to increase your heart rate and blood pressure to optimal levels.
Be sure to know and follow the rules of the game. Doing so helps you and other players avoid injuries and altercations. Sticking to the rules also makes playing the game more fun for everyone. Finally, if you are sick or injured, you need to rest, recover, and seek medical treatment. If you try to come back too soon, you risk of re-injuring yourself even more seriously than before. Do not take pain relievers just to mask the pain and join the sport. Never play until your illness or injury has fully healed. Your doctor, trainer, or coach will give you specific advice on what to do to hasten the healing process so you can play again.
